NORMAL, Ill. – Southern Illinois baseball fell to Illinois State 7-1 on Saturday afternoon at Duffy Bass Field in Normal, ending the series with the Redbirds.

Junior designated hitter Justin Keuss was the lone Saluki to cross the plate after recording his first triple of the season to lead off the game’s third inning. The St. Louis native later came in at a hitter Trey Cutchen flew to left field for the sacrifice fly to tie the game at one run apiece.

Illinois State would turn up the pressure in the fourth inning with a five-hit inning en route to three runs and taking a 4-1 lead. With one out on the board, ILS would put a runner on base with a single. A high throw on a pick-off put a runner in scoring position before SIU was able to induce a flyout for the second out of the inning.

The Redbirds would score four straight hits with two outs to score the runs, including a two-run double by Shai Robinson. Saluki starting pitcher Al Holguin – making his first start in two weeks due to injury – would leave the ballgame in the fourth inning Easton Dermody was called up to take the final out of the fourth.

Three more points would come against Illinois State in the match as the Redbirds were able to cruise to victory in the series.

Southern was held to just four hits in the game, while ILS went for 11 hits led by Auggie Rasmussen with a 3-for-4 day at the plate.

Holguin (3-3) took the loss for the Dawgs after 3.2 innings, allowing six hits and four runs. The left-hander struck out three and walked one in his return. Dermody threw 2.2 innings in relief, walking five and allowing two runs.

Right-handed Tanner Perry led the way on the mound for Illinois State, going seven full innings and allowing just one run on two hits, making the season 6-5. Perry struck out four and walked five in the outing. Matthew Donnison finished the final two innings, allowing only two hits.

The Redbirds left 13 runners on base, while SIU left seven runners on base.


Southern Illinois will try to salvage a game in the series on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Luke Martin will call the action on the Varsity Network.
